El Potro Mexican Restaurant

El Potro Mexican Restaurant has made its home where breakfast-brunch place, Le Peep, used to be on the corner of Kirkman Road and Conroy Road. They offer hearty, homestyle Mexican at affordable prices.

The buffet is the best value, and everything on the long, L-shaped table is fabulous! My favorite thing to do so far is to build a near impossible tower of delicious food on top of a large, fresh and flaky taco shell cup. There’s a good variety of tender roast ham, chicken, and meats on the buffet, and the fresh pico de gallo is my top favorite from the sauce section.  Fresh chips and spicy salsa are also delivered to every table regardless if you’re eating from the buffet or ordering from the menu.

If my visit is a menu kind of night, I’d order the Guadalajara Special again and again. If you can imagine a sampling of every well-known Mexican restaurant staple, it’s on the Guadalajara Special. Think mixed grill with plenty of extras thrown in, but beware! There’s enough food on that plate for two adults, although left-overs from El Potro are tasty anyway. Win-win!

Every time I see another sizzling plate presented to a nearby table with a flourish, I can’t wait to come back to try more of the house specials. At least I know a carafe of sangria will be a staple at my table no matter what. The sangria can be ordered by the glass or carafe, and is served with juicy chunks of fruit and a nice zing depending on the night.

The service at El Potro is always kind and with a smile, but slow due to the sheer volume of business on peak nights. Good for El Potro but unfortunate for guests who visit during Friday and Saturday nights. The rich food aroma will also stick to whatever your wearing if you sit inside, so if you’re planning on a night out on the town afterwards, ask to be seated outside.

I can’t wait to revisit El Potro and try something new off the menu!
